Backgammon Cheater Goes to Prison

Lakma found himself charged and sentenced for grand larceny after being disqualified from the Backgammon Regata Gala that took place in Moine, France at the end of December. In a dramatic turn of events due to the high stakes and the $3 million prize pool, the charge of grand larceny was introduced. Lakma entered a plea bargain and pleaded guilty.

After showing a great deal of remorse for his actions, Lakma issued a press statement:

“I sincerely apologize to my fellow backgammon contestants. I understand that I brought the game of backgammon into disrepute. This was not my intention. I just wanted the money. I will do whatever it takes now to return the good name of backgammon and the reputation of backgammon tournaments across the world. I am prepared to accept any punishment that the court sees fit to sentence.”

The sentence was handed out by Judge Frederick Pransalot who stated “This is a tragic turn of events. Under the circumstances and for the sake of the precedent which is being set today, I can do nothing but sentence you to ten years in a medium security institution.” Tears were seen running down the cheeks of Laurent Lakma after sentencing was passed.

“This is justice at its finest” commented Joe Laurence, VP of Marketing. “The sentence may seem a little harsh but I truly think and believe that it needed to be. It will certainly make the next rotten scoundrel think twice before trying to cheat in a backgammon tournament. This behavior just won’t be tolerated. That is the message that this sentence is relaying to all the cheaters of the world”.
